Tunnels (Picture Berlin)
For me, the opportunity to undertake my first artist in residency in Berlin is an intensified experience of dread, a chance to completely isolate my Self from its ground of identification and to split my vision into two: the internal and the external. With this mindset, I see Berlin is a city full of what I interpret as Split Vision: it is a wonderland built upon an underworld. Its melancholic history and its utopian dream contradict yet intertwine, which is akin to the opposed currents in the vortex. Berlin is also a city full of mirrors; in particular, the mirrors at the end of the subway platforms that serve as rear-vision mirrors for the train drivers. For me, its symbolic meaning is far beyond its practical function. It presents a Split Vision: the train is moving in one direction while its reflection is moving in an opposite direction.
